"Rogue" name brokers

Even as the Internet grows to accommodate more domain names, forces outside the mainstream are muddying the water. Some "rogue" Internet registries are allowing people to register domain names with extensions not among those currently agreed upon by the Internet community. There are also tiny countries like Tonga or Jamaica, where unorthodox domains are up for sale. The flurry of unorthodox domains is expected to make the Internet even more cluttered and confusing.

The Internet is feeling growing pains. After much arbitration, the number of domain name suffixes is scheduled to grow next year, to include seven new top-level domain names, ending in the suffixes: .firm, .shop, .web, .arts, .rec, .info, and .nom. The rush is already on to register domain names with these new extensions, which are expected to be put into use by February. It can all be confusing to the novice, but at rates of only $50-100 a year to register a domain name, it may be worthwhile to learn more about the Internet name game.
